I also love being able to go luxe in my small house—1100sq ft for me, husband, kids 10&14. We got all new doors and fancy doorknobs…because we only have 6 doors. (Oh, and solid wood doors block sound MUCH better than hollow-core…big life improvement!)
Thanks for the Thanksgiving morning read, Laura! All true things...With my own small home, I'm grateful for the way it lets me (reminds me, forces me) to be thoughtful about what I incorporate. I've always been a minimalist, anyway, but I do think the art of editing a space and living small (or even smallish) can bring a certain lightness. Thanks for celebrating all that!
Yes, 100-percent: Living small you really have to edit to what you truly love. Your comment reminds me of a great quote from Steven Johanknecht of Commune Design, "A good home is like a good suit—it’s always about the fit. Sometimes a small space is the perfect size, and the pleasure of a home where you use and enjoy every room is a way of living a luxurious life surrounded by what you love and the life you have collected.”
Happy Thanksgiving Laura. This was so beautifully written. I love my small home too and often tell it how much we love it. I knew it was the one the first time I stepped through the door. It’s a happy little house. I’ve lived in big homes and never want that much to take care of again.
It’s so much fun to creatively re-invent a small home. I’ll be 40 years (!) in mine next September! Thinking about having a “house cooling” party and giving away more art and pretty objects! My daughter helps me keep the books sorted and she’s always willing to re-arrange furniture! Love your blog, and book, and thankful I found you and your community, Laura!

New doorknobs are on my wish list! And three cheers for solid wood doors: we have the originals in our1940s apartment
Love your writing, Laura and always look forward to your pieces!
Thank you so much!
