Welcome.

LIVING SMALL is a home & garden newsletter that has its roots in small-space living, but it is about so much more.

In this newsletter, “living small” encompasses living more lightly on the earth, having a “small” footprint, and making an impact on a local level. Each week, we explore topics like low-impact renovation, the truth about decluttering, all things secondhand, climate-friendly gardening, and a general ethos of making do and mending instead of buying something new. If these sound like the kind of things you’re interested in, I encourage you to join our community.

LIVING SMALL is one of Substack's top design outlets.

Who am I?

LIVING SMALL is written by me, Laura Fenton, a journalist and author. I’ve been writing about home design and sustainability for magazines and websites for more than 20 years, and I am the author of two books, The Little Book of Living Small and The Bunk Bed Book. A life-long treehugger, my interest in the intersection between home design and sustainability got kicked into high gear when I became a parent nine years ago. After 20+ years living in New York City apartments, I know living small first-hand.
